Ben
A knock at my door drew my attention from the book I was reading. I sighed and folded over the page before calling out for whoever it was to enter. I knew it was one of three people I didnât really want to see. Not in my bedroom at night, anyway. My parents were spending time at their cabin while I stayed at their house with Amber, Hannah, and Rachel. It was fine. I was used to staying close to the members of my clan, but the three of them had been driving me up a wall lately.
Sure enough, it was Amber opening my door and stepping into my room. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, her body clad in only a sheer gown. âI saw your light on. Do you need some company?â
Just a couple months prior, I wouldâve welcomed her company. She was fun in bed, but I hadnât been interested after meeting Jemma. Or reintroducing myself to Jemma, should I say. I couldnât even look at the three of them in a sexual way anymore. Some nights, when Iâd been surrounded by Jemma and her sweet scent all day and I was as hard as a rock, I thought about it. I wondered if itâd be possible to take care of that need with someone else, but it never took me very long to realize that no one else would do.
I didnât want one of them. I wanted Jemma. Strange-as-hell, Christmas-obsessed, Jemma.
âBen?â
I looked up and saw Amber standing there, waiting. Shaking my head, I smiled and held up my book. âIâm good. Just getting some reading done before I fall asleep.â
She frowned but nodded. âOkay. Just let me know if you change your mind.â
I gritted my teeth but reminded myself that I was their alpha. I had a responsibility to them. I owed them a lot for sticking to my clan when times had been tough. They were strong, powerful bears. âYou did great running through those drills with the younger kids today. I think they were really catching on.â
She hesitated and then grinned. âThey were great. Most of the people here are great.â
I nodded and opened my book again. âIâm glad you think so, too. Get some rest. Tomorrow will be another big day.â
âAnd youâre sure you donât need company? Itâs been a while.â
I lifted my book and nodded towards the door. âGoodnight, Amber.â
She left, and then I was alone with my book and my thoughts. I did want company. I just wanted the company of a woman who seemed to not be able to function around me. Jemma had been so weird around me that I wasnât sure if Iâd imagined the woman from the club. That woman liked me. Sheâd wanted me as badly as Iâd wanted her. The Jemma I saw almost every day didnât seem to like me at all. Even before I canceled her Christmas events, she hadnât wanted to be near me.
I sighed and tossed my book aside.
